Passport Requirements for Greece
Here is a list of Greece passport requirements you will need to apply for your Greek passport:
If you are getting a Greek passport for the first time, you’ll need these documents:
- Filled out application form
- A photocopy of both sides of your ID card
- If you are a permanent overseas resident without an ID card, you’ll have to submit a Greek birth certificate and certificate of civil status to the Greek consul instead
- Color photograph that is 40x60mm and taken within the last month (more details here)
- Receipt for the administrative fees that you’ve paid
How to Apply for a Greek Passport
- You’ll need to apply in person at a Passport Office—the nearest one to your permanent residence.
- Fill out the application.
- Attach supporting documents.
- Pay the administrative fee.
Note: Remember, the application is in part a legal statement about your status. As part of the Greek passport requirements be prepared to confirm if you’ve been convicted, prosecuted, or banned from leaving the country. And you’ll also need to be willing to admit if you are a draft evader or deserter.
Applying for First-Time Greek Passport or Renewing a Greek Passport?
Your application for a Greek passport differs depending on if this is your first-time or if you are renewing.
- First-Time Greek Passport: You’ll need to use form E1a. This also applies if you have an older passport issued by an institution other than the Hellenic Police.
- Renewing an Expired or Soon-to-Expire Passport: If your passport from the Hellenic Police is expired or will expire within 12 months, use form E2a.
- Replacing a Valid Passport: If your passport from the Hellenic Police is still valid but you need a replacement, use form E3a.
- Lost or Stolen Passport: Form E4a.
Can Minors Apply for a Greek Passport?
The passport Greece requirements state that if you are a minor, you will need a parent or legal guardian present when submitting the passport application and documents. If both parents are guardians, one parent’s presence and written permission from the other (validated by the government) is enough.
If neither parent can be there due to an emergency, a relative can bring the documents as long as they have authorization from one parent and written consent from the other, both verified. A Commissioner is assigned to handle the application if no relative can be authorized.
How Much Does a Passport in Greece Cost?
Administrative fees depend on the kind of passport you are getting:
- 10-year passport: €84.40
- 13-month passport: €68.80
- 8-month passport: €63.40
If your passport is rejected, you’ll get your fee back except for €5, which is held to pay for various handling costs.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Greek Passport?
You should be able to collect your passport within 4-6 weeks of submitting your application.
This is as long as everything you submit checks out and there are no follow-ups you need, but in our experience, passport applications are generally pretty smooth processes—that is, as long as you have all the documents you need.
